Although they are as popular in today’s hyper-sensitive
society, unmonitored systems are still better than no system. Unlike
a monitored system, there is no second party to alert the police, so
these systems usually consist of an on-site alarm and/or flashing lights
that indicate the security system has been breached. It is the homeowners’,
neighbors’ or passers by’s duty to call the police. The
alarm may go unnoticed if no one in the neighborhood is at home or no
one notices the alarm.
Also in our confrontation-phobic society, there is a good chance that
your neighbor may choose not to get involved. An unmonitored system
is not likely a viable option in a remote or rural area.
According to statistics, most triggered alarms are false alarms, which
could decrease the effectiveness of unmonitored systems. If one system
is particularly sensitive, it will not only annoy the neighbors, it
could also create a “boy-who-cried-wolf” scenario where
people are less likely to respond after frequent upsets.
